Cardigan Mountain School:
Cardigan Mountain School (CMS) is an accredited, boarding and day middle school for boys in grades 6-9 located in Canaan, New Hampshire in the New England region of the northeastern United States. At CMS we instill a love of learning and promote intellectual curiosity and growth, recognizing that each person learns differently.
Cardigan’s curriculum is designed to support and challenge each student as the School prepares him for the demanding academic programs characteristic of the independent schools most graduates attend.
Mastery of fundamental skills and exploration of content is emphasized in all disciplines. Our program offers boys wonderful opportunities for academic, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth and development at a crucial stage of their adolescence.
Our students interact with the adults in our community throughout each day both in and outside of the classroom, and the relationships developed through these interactions provide our boys with strong mentoring and positive role models in all aspects of their lives.
Our Mission:
Cardigan Mountain School offers a close-knit community that prepares middle school boys – in mind, body, and spirit – for responsible and meaningful lives in a global society.
- Core Courses: English, History, Math, Science, a World Language (French, Latin, or Spanish), and Personalized Education for the Acquisition of Knowledge and Skills (PEAKS), Building Confidence in English (BCE).
- Additional Courses: Competitive Athletics Program, Creative Arts Offerings, and an abundance of Extracurricular Activities.
May I go home on weekends?
Many weekends during the year are “open,” so that students can go home or to the homes of classmates who live close by. If it is an “open” weekend, students may go home after all commitments are met on campus and the proper permissions have been acquired. Students must fill out a weekend slip and acquire parental permission by noon on Friday to get approval for weekend travel.
The School is located off a quiet, secluded street in a typical New England village. The campus itself is situated on a peninsula extending into Canaan Street Lake, 1,200 feet above sea level.
Within sight of Mount Cardigan, the campus enjoys views of surrounding hills and valleys. The campus comprises 525 acres of woods, fields, and lake shore, with colonial brick dormitories, a well-stocked library, modern classrooms, woodworking shop, language laboratory, chapel, student health center, theater, athletic complex, and state-of-the-art hockey arena.
