International School of Lausanne:
The International School of Lausanne is an accredited, not-for-profit, open admissions English language-based school for day students of all nationalities, aged 3-18. Located near the beautiful Lac Leman in Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, which lies north of Lausanne in Canton of Waadt in western Switzerland, we have been providing an exceptional academic and extra-curricular programme for the local and international community since 1962. The School comprises the Primary School including the Early Childhood Centre and the Secondary School, made up of the Middle and High Schools.
Early Childhood Centre - Primary Years Programme:
The initial aim of the Early Childhood Centre programme is to provide the children with a happy and secure atmosphere within the school framework. There is a sympathetic approach to, and awareness of, the very diverse learning needs of each individual. The ECC makes provision for the different starting points from which children develop their learning, building on what they can already do. Planned activities relate specifically to the developmental characteristics of the pre-school child. The relevant and appropriate content of these activities match the different levels of young children’s needs. They are designed to promote:
* The use and comprehension of the language of instruction
* Early concepts of number
* Gross and fine motor skills
* Spatial and environment awareness
* Acceptable social and work habits
* Confidence and independence
Primary School - Primary Years Programme:
The Primary School Section, Years 1-6, (Grades K-5) is housed in the east wing of the building. Children are taught in mixed ability groups for all subjects, except for French from Year 3.
Each child has a class teacher who is responsible for the well-being of the pupils in his or her charge.
The curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) and designed with the diversity of our community in mind. We aim to bring out the best in our students so that they will be successful, both here in Lausanne and in other schools throughout the world.
The following subjects are taught by class teachers : Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Information Technology and Art.
French, Music, Physical Education and Library are taught by specialist staff.
English as an Additional Language classes are organised for those children who need English language acquisition skills, and a specialist teachers is available for students with specific learning needs.
Secondary School:
The Secondary School comprises a Middle School (Years 7 to 9) and a High School (Years 10 to 13)
Years 7 to 9 - Middle Years Programme:
In the Middle School, there are two homeroom groups of twenty-two students in each year. Each homeroom group has two homeroom teachers who provide the first level of pastoral care for the Middle School students. The homeroom teachers teach their homeroom students for at least one of their timetabled subjects and therefore get to know them very well, forming close relationships over the year. The homeroom teachers are sensitive to the particular needs of Middle School students as they negotiate the early years of adolescence.
In the Middle School (Years 7 to 9), the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) is well established as the curriculum of choice. The overall philosophy of the programme is expressed through three fundamental concepts that support and strengthen all areas of the curriculum. These concepts are based on: intercultural awareness, holistic learning and communication.
Years 10 to 13- International Baccalaureate Diploma:
In the final two years of the High School (Years 12 and 13) the students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) which is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world´s leading universities.
IB Diploma Programme students study six courses at higher level or standard level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics.
