John F. Kennedy International School, Bern:
John F. Kennedy International School, located in Saanen, in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, is a co-educational English-language boarding and day school for children ages 5 to 14 (grades K - 8). The school is a charter member of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which has developed units of study specifically designed for international schools. This curriculum is based on a clear philosophy of international education in a time of rapid global change, and also reflects recent developments in our understanding of how the brain works and how children learn. The student body is made up of 75 students from over twenty different countries. Boarding enrolment is limited to 30 students in order to maintain first-rate quality of care in our family-like environment.
The Kennedy School is an accredited institution and was awarded a Quality School Certificate (QSC) in May 2009 by Pro Cert, it is also accredited by the Department of Education for the Canton of Bern. The Kennedy School holds memberships in the Council of International Schools (CIS), the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) and the Federation of Swiss Private Schools. The school is also a charter member of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
The School Program:
The school's program is designed to meet the individual needs of each child and to provide a firm foundation of academic skills and work habits necessary for success in university-preparatory secondary schools. Due to the international nature of the school, a deliberate effort is made to foster a global viewpoint in the students, taking the learning experience beyond the classroom and utilizing Switzerland's vast natural and cultural resources. A rich offering of sports and activities aids in developing the whole person and in providing the students with constructive alternatives for the use of their leisure time.
School Life:
The Boarding Chalet is a classic Bernese farmhouse, which has been converted to comfortably accommodate 25 - 30 boarders. Three or four students share simple, cheerfully-decorated, wood-panelled rooms. Girls occupy one floor and the boys another. Boarding students are well looked after by the Housemother, two Assistant House Parents and a House Advisor. These professionals are responsible for health care, social development, meal and homework supervision and student counselling. In fact, all teachers and staff members participate in the care and supervision of the boarders at times. In many ways, Kennedy School boarding students become very much like a large, caring family.
