The Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC) Swim School at Camden Avenue and Kooser, south of downtown San Jose, is an award winning swim school that has been providing year-round group swimming lessons for people of all ages - from infants through adults since 1964. We are the top-ranked learn-to-swim program in the South Bay area because we create happy swimmers, children who are comfortable and safe in the water and who love to swim.

Our Swim Teachers:
To become an AVAC Swim School teacher, one must demonstrate a love of children. Comfort in the water is a must, but competitive swimming skills are not required. We train all of our teachers to teach the proprietary AVAC Method of swim lessons. Each new teacher undergoes approximately 50 hours of training which includes introduction to our programs and philosophies, one-on-one, in-water training, 30 plus hours of shadowing and team teaching existing classes with experienced teachers, as well as lesson planning and emergency action plan procedures. All of this is followed by weekly meetings with their peer mentor.

The mission of AVAC Swim School is to impart an appreciation of water while developing swimming skills, to provide a personalized customer experience, and to employ fun-loving and knowledgeable individuals who will embody the spirit of play in a nurturing, safe, family-centered environment.

The Aztec Aquaplex, located on the San Diego State University (SDSU) campus in northeastern San Diego, is a recreation center & aquaplex offering year-round public swim lessons to children and adults. The facility hosts three swimming pools: an Olympic-size (50 meter) pool, a Recreational pool and a Hydrotherapy spa. There are also two 3-meter and two 1-meter diving boards. Children under 18 years of age must pass a deep water swim test to use the diving boards.
