BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School GmbH:
Berlin Brandenburg International School (BBIS) is a private, state-approved, coeducational, English language day and boarding school serving the internationally-minded community of Germany's capital region and beyond. The BBIS campus is located in the village of Kleinmachnow, bordering the southwest of Berlin, on a large, quiet, wooded hill along Machnower lake. Founded in 1990, BBIS is an International IB World School authorized by the IB organization to teach all four IB programs. BBIS is truly an international school, with 680 students representing 58 nationalities. Classes are small, usually with fewer than 18 students. The boarding school, located directly on the BBIS campus, houses 25 international students from grades 9 through 12.
We are an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, to teach all four International Baccalaureate programs: Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP), Diploma Program (DP) and Career-related Certificate Program (IBCC) covering the 3-19 age range. We are also fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA).
High School (Grades 9-12):
The High School at BBIS runs from grades 9 to 12. Students complete the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 9 and 10 and then move on to the IB Diploma Program (DP) or the IB Career-related Certificate Program (IBCC) in grades 11 and 12.
At the end of grade 10, after the completion of the MYP Personal Project, successful students receive a BBIS MYP Certificate. Grade 12 students have the opportunity to receive the IB Diploma, a qualification recognized by universities and colleges throughout the world (BBIS has an excellent pass rate and has recently become one of the few schools to have had students achieve the maximum of 45 points on the diploma), OR the IB Career-related Certificate preparing them for studies in business or professional training after leaving school. IBCC students can go on to the North American university system as well.
The High School encourages students to be active learners, engaged world citizens, and well-rounded individuals. Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide selection of extracurricular activities that include sailing, basketball, yoga, drawing, Human Rights Club, Musical Mania, Model United Nations, and dozens more. All High School students have the opportunity to participate in curriculum-related field trips within Germany and abroad.
In grades 9 and 10 students have the option to choose between music and visual art. The art teachers provide instruction and practice in the use of materials, techniques, tools, skills, and concepts. The ultimate goal is to develop the ability to apply the elements and principles of art to create, discuss, and appreciate works of art. The curriculum develops cyclically, with skills and concepts being introduced and revisited throughout the IB programs. The production and appreciation of the visual arts provide a substantial vehicle for realizing diversity in individuals, societies, and cultures. We feel strongly about the fact that visual arts at BBIS provide a dynamic forum for expression and discussion, for acquiring skills and techniques, and for constant interaction with the values and preferences of different cultures.
The visual arts department strives to develop and maintain a stimulating, calm, safe, and challenging learning environment, in which communication is based on encouragement, trust, respect, and tolerance. We actively seek learning opportunities outside the classroom and make every possible effort to tap into the vast Berlin/Potsdam museum and gallery scene.
BBIS has well-equipped music classrooms with a wide range of instruments, a music technology lab, private practice rooms, and several performance spaces. Within the MYP framework, students continue with group music-making and performing, benefitting from music as a vehicle for communicating with each other and the world. They build up a broad musical repertoire by learning part-songs and canons from different cultures and time periods. At the same time, students develop their aural perception, analysis, musical literacy, and composing skills while studying the contexts of music history and the structures of music theory. From grade 9 on, music is an elective.
Through differentiated instruction, students have the opportunity to acquire, develop, and enhance the composition and performance skills necessary to open doors to the IB Diploma Music program. The IB Diploma Music program is an exciting course that enables students to reach their full potential as young performers and composers and encourages the development of their analytical skills. There is a suite of computers available where students experiment with various composition programmes. Music teachers encourage students to find their own voice through their original composition work and multiple performance opportunities during the school year. Students are encouraged to listen to a wide variety of music critically and attend live performances whenever possible.
Private Music Lessons and Ensembles:
BBIS supports an extensive peripatetic instrumental music program, offering private music lessons. In addition, the Music Department at BBIS is a centre for the bi-annual Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music practical and theoretical examinations. As part of its diverse extracurricular program, BBIS provides various vocal, instrumental, and musical theatre activities. Students and staff interact in many of these activities, developing a safe environment for taking risks as well as creating a meaningful sense of community at BBIS.
The mission of the Berlin Brandenburg International School Drama Department is simple: we want our students to realize their academic and artistic potential. First, we seek to foster a lifelong love and participation in the theatrical arts. We do this by offering a number of educational opportunities for students whether they seek to enhance their confidence in oral expression, develop recreational performing talents, or focus on applying these skills professionally.
We believe that all students deserve an opportunity to grow through the exploration and experimentation in the theatre. We do not limit students at any level of coursework, and we strive to involve as many students as possible both on-stage and off in our extracurricular productions. We purposefully select scripts that stretch our students while offering numerous opportunities for students to grow.
Through our relentless pursuit of excellence in theatre arts, we are committed to fostering hard work, integrity, personal responsibility, and respect for self and others. We aim to help students understand the nature of the theatre: to understand it by performing theatre as well as by studying theatre; to understand theatre not only with their minds but with their senses, their bodies and their emotions; to understand the diverse forms theatre takes in cultures other than their own; and through this understanding to better understand themselves, their society, and their world. Through exploration and engagement in the theatre, students will discover the value and impact of the arts in society and culture. The goal is create lifelong learners, performers, and patrons of the arts.
A carefully planned programme of physical education and sporting activities at BBIS contributes significantly to balanced education students receive at BBIS. Students have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of sports and activities and are taught foundational skills so that further participation at team or recreational level is possible at any time in life. The school also encourages students to view sport as an activity for life and not merely a school requirement. The programme emphasizes participation, commitment, self-discipline, fair play, sportsmanship, effort, and teamwork.
