Private Day / Boarding School in New York State

The Masters School, New York:
The Masters School is a coed day and boarding school that engages 5th-12th grade students in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. Located on a majestic 96-acre suburban campus in Dobbs Ferry, we are just 35 minutes from New York City. The Masters School is a vibrant and diverse learning community with more than 550 students from around the country and the world, more than 100 faculty and staff, thousands of alumnae/i, and hundreds of parents, grandparents, and friends who support Dobbs in so many meaningful ways. Each day our experienced and dedicated teachers engage, challenge, and support their students—in the classroom, on the athletic fields and the stage, in the dormitories, and on regular expeditions to New York City—doing all they can to help the young people we serve become their best selves. With over 131 years of history and tradition, we continually draw upon the values and experiences of those who came before us to forge an ever stronger school for today and tomorrow.

 Mission:

THE MISSION OF THE MASTERS SCHOOL is to provide the challenging academic environment that, for over a century, has encouraged critical, creative and independent habits of thought as well as a lifelong passion for learning. The Masters School promotes and celebrates academic achievement, artistic development, ethical awareness, technological literacy, athletic endeavor and personal growth. The School strives to maintain a diverse community that encourages students to participate actively in decisions affecting their lives and to develop an appreciation of their responsibilities in the larger world.

 Faculty:

FacultyMore than 70 percent of our faculty members hold advanced degrees from leading universities. They interact with students all day in a variety of roles—as instructors, coaches, advisors, and dorm parents—and thus have a true understanding of each student’s interests, talents, and goals.

Our faculty works hard to build academic programs that encourage intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and personal fulfillment. The goal is to equip our students with the tools to function effectively in the world and promote a life-long love of learning.

 Accreditation:

We are accredited by the the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

 Programs:

 Community Life:

Our 24/7 community gives students opportunities for growth, friendship, entertainment, and fun. Athletic competitions, art exhibits, and music and dramatic performances are just some of the events that take place at The Masters School. In their free time, students follow their own pursuits: the Student Activities Center, library, gym, music building, athletic fields, and art studio buzz with activity. These activities build strong bonds among boarding and day students, who often come early, stay late, and frequently join in dorm activities.

Throughout the day, in and beyond the classroom, all our students benefit from the presence and guidance of faculty, many of whom live on campus with their families.

 Boarding:

The Masters School offers one of the only boarding school experiences in the New York metropolitan area. Set amid 96 acres of fields and woodlands overlooking the Hudson River, our students have a scenic and comfortable environment for living and learning. The combination of boarding and day students results in an exceptionally dynamic and diverse community life where students from across the country and around the globe form strong friendships with each other and with day students.

Here, there is no pressure to conform to a particular mold: students are free to be who they are: teenagers. A thoughtfully designed residential life program ensures that all the experiences students would have at home—from nights at the movies to dances to driver’s ed—are part of campus life.

 Co-Curricular Activities:

Co-Curricular ActivitiesWhen classes end each weekday at 3:00 p.m. all Upper School students participate in a co-curricular activity of their choice, which might include sports, drama, community service, or studio art. The flexibility and options, which change each term, enable students to devote significant time to areas of individual interest and add a special dynamism to the School community.

 Clubs and Organizations:

Clubs and OrganizationsFrom fiction writing to a cappella singing to hiking and camping trips, students have exciting opportunities to explore their passions and develop new ones. With more than 30 organizations to choose from, students share their interests and advance worthy causes.

True to our belief in diversity and collaboration, most groups are co-led by a male and female student. Student activities add immense energy to campus life, and foster leadership and organizational skills—vital assets for life in college and beyond.

 A diverse and global culture:

Masters School students come from across the nation and around the world, bringing with them tremendous vibrancy and remarkable friendliness. With the support of their peers, students stretch their limits, step into new roles, and realize their full and unique potential.
