Macclesfield Tutorial College, Cheshire:
Established in 1991, the Expert Tutorials business began as a tuition agency and later started to accommodate students wanting complete courses. In early 1995 the business moved to larger premises at Macclesfield Tutorial College in Cumberland Street, Macclesfield in Cheshire, North-West England. The College now caters for both full and part-time students and, provides GCSE and A Level courses in a wide range of subjects. Most places are for students sixteen plus and a few places are available to students younger than this. The college also offers full and part-time places to adults.
All courses provide a structure to the students’ learning, aiming to increase their knowledge and self-confidence, to improve their understanding and examination techniques and to provide a basis for further study.
- The GCSE Course:
This one or two year course is for students wishing to take a broad range of subjects in preparation for further study. Many subjects and combinations of subjects are available.
- The A-Level Course:
GCE A-Levels may be studied over one or two years. Any number of subjects may be taken, and individual programmes are arranged. Academic and careers advice is offered to students who are unsure of their selection of subjects. Students can opt for full-time or part-time status.
- Revision Courses:
Revision courses for individuals or groups may be held throughout the year, but are particularly popular during the Easter holidays and the May half-term. Revision courses at the College have been held at these times since the College’s opening, and our staff have accumulated a wealth of experience to pass on to examinees.
- June Retakes:
June retakes allow students to repeat subjects already taken in January or the previous June. If candidates have the need to repeat several subjects, resits in November, January and June can be used to spread the load of study throughout the year.
One year courses are available at GCSE, GCE A/S, GCE Advanced Levels and Cambridge Certificate. The A/S courses in particular mixed with subjects taken at A-Level can serve to broaden the curriculum.
Two Year Courses:
Two year courses enable students to complete a two year programme of Advanced GCE subjects. Many combinations are possible, as programmes are individually tailored to meet student needs. In addition to the normal subjects on offer many other subjects are available.
The College is an examination centre. GCSE and GCE A-Level examinations with various boards can be taken at the College, and RSA and other examinations can be arranged.
David Furphy qualified as a teacher, subsequently graduated in Mathematics and Computing with the Open University and completed a Masters Degree at the Victoria University of Manchester.
He has taught for many years in both state and independent sectors. He has been Head of Faculty, Head of Year, Head of House, Head of Middle School and Deputy Head Teacher prior to becoming the Principal at Macclesfield Tutorial College.
Janet Richardson is responsible for office and financial management. She has an Honours Degree in French from Sheffield University, and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Durham.
From there she went on to teach in grammar and comprehensive schools. She teaches French to all ages, and is experienced in Language curriculum development. Janet is an enthusiastic teacher and, as a personal tutor, takes a great interest in all our students.
The college has a number of well-qualified, experienced teachers available. All the teachers are dedicated tutors from a variety of backgrounds including state and independent education and universities. They are all qualified in their fields, and treat their students sympathetically, whilst encouraging them to be mature and well-motivated in their work. Examination techniques are emphasised and students are urged to be involved, ask questions, and discuss their studies with both their teaching tutor and personal tutor throughout their course.
Teaching takes place on an individual basis or in small groups of no more than eight. Students are therefore encouraged to ask questions about areas of study which they find difficult, and the tutor has time to give the students individual attention, thus developing their skills and confidence.
If the students are preparing for examinations, there will be plenty of practice in exam questions and familiarisation with exam procedure. Where relevant, particular emphasis is placed on essay writing, which is a task in which many students need guidance.
Homework is always set, corrected and fully explained, a task which is sometimes difficult in a larger group of students.
Private study time is built in to the timetables of both part-time and full-time students.
Parents can receive regular monthly reports on students’ progress
Advice on suitable courses, further education, careers and examination entry is available from qualified personnel.
