The Athens Centre 1969- 2008:
The Athens Centre is a private organization founded by a group of scholars and artists interested in providing educational programs and artistic events for students and adults of all nationalities. Its main activities include a modern Greek language program, and semester abroad programs with participating universities. Cultural activities include an annual touring theatre festival of ancient Greek drama, guest speakers, and exhibits. The Centre is housed in a neo-classical building in the Mets area of Athens. It's facilities include a computer centre, a Greek studies library and an apartment complex for student housing.
The Centre plays a unique role as an educational institution. Its programs emphasize quality instruction in an environment conducive to learning. Individual attention is given to all participants. The Centre's classes are an enjoyable experience. Being at the Centre one feels in touch with some of the best elements that Greece has to offer.

All instructors at the Centre are language specialists who use methods whereby the individual learns Greek comfortably at all levels. The methods used emphasize spoken Greek, and include language games and exercises combined with textbooks and other materials. Instructors are Greek nationals who speak English and several other languages. Two of the instructors have written and published widely-used Greek language textbooks, and other have written supplementary books to enrich the language program.
For the convenience of participants from abroad, the Centre keeps a file of available housing, including apartment sublets, and nearby hotels and pensions.
The island of Spetses is located in the Saronic gulf about 60 miles from Athens. It can be reached by hydrofoil ( about 2 1/2 hours) which departs frequently from the port of Piraeus. Spetses can be reached by car via Corinth and Porto Heli. Cars are not permitted on Spetses but water taxis are available to and from Porto Heli and Costa. Local transport on the island is by horse carriage, water taxi and bus. Participants do not need transport to get to their classes.
