Postgraduate Degree Programmes - Master of Science (MSc) 1-Year Courses:
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has a large postgraduate community, undertaking both taught and research-based programmes under the guidance of the Department's expert staff and researchers.
A 'postgraduate' degree programme is a further degree (i.e. where you are continuing study after already having been awarded your first degree). The Department's world leading research activities allow us to offer specialised degrees of this type, and the following postgraduate degree programmes are available:
- Master of Science (MSc) in Communication Networks and Signal Processing
- Master of Science (MSc) in Image & Video Communications and Signal Processing
- Master of Science (MSc) in Optical Communications and Signal Processing
- Master of Science (MSc) in Wireless Communication Systems and Signal Processing
PhD Opportunities:
An MSc or PhD by research is an extremely challenging and rewarding method of study for a higher degree. The student is expected to produce a significant contribution to the development and understanding of a specific field within Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Communications or Energy Management, and this affords an exciting opportunity to engage in leading-edge research in an internationally recognised university.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold the equivalent of a 1st or 2.1 (Hons) degree. Occasionally candidates with a different class of degree may be admitted if they can demonstrate their potential for higher degree work, e.g. by holding other qualifications, presenting published work or if they have relevant work experience. Applicants who's previous degree was not taught in English will also be required to demonstrate competence to study in English, e.g. via an IELTS test certificate.
Period of Study:
* MSc by Research: Either 1 or 2 years of full-time study.
* PhD: 2 or 3 years of full-time study.
Most postgraduate research students undertake PhD research and generally take three years to complete their study.
Quality Academics:
Higher education league tables consistently place this Department amongst the best in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the UK, in terms of the research output, but also for the excellent teaching quality provided, which is reflected in the strong employment prospects of our students.
The Department's commitment to high teaching quality is recognised by its maximum possible mark of 24/24 in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) by independent inspectors from HEFCE. The Department is also recognised as internationally excellent in its research activities through the RAE2008 Research Assessment Exercise with 65% of our staff falling within this category.
Our Graduates:
Bristol graduates enjoy a broad range of career opportunities. These include consumer and industrial electronics, integrated circuit design, computer architecture, software development, healthcare technology, telecommunications, gaming and software development, optical communications, quantum information, image processing, electrical energy and control, technical consultancy, finance, and management. Industry demand for electrical and electronic engineers has never been higher. Our graduates are highly sought after, with 94% securing well-paid employment within 6 months of graduation.
