ThroughouImage of Engineering degree in Lyon, Fancet their curriculum at INSA Lyon, engineering students are supported in the elaboration and achievement of their personal and professional projects. The students associations, the general campus life and in particular participation in INSA's democratic bodies play an important role in this respect. Students are in charge of their curriculum: the INSA endeavours to meet their expectations and to personalise as far as possible their education.

Training is organised over a period of 5 years, with a progressive specialisation that respects, as far as possible, students' choices with regard to their speciality. In addition to scientific and technological disciplines, human, social and management sciences constitute an integral part of the curriculum.
The establishment endeavours to implement an active and motivating pedagogical approach: training through projects, personal achievements, teamwork, extensive use of Information and Communication Technologies (IT). The training involves mastering the “fundamentals” of engineering sciences as well as the creation of an environment that will stimulate the emergence of new behaviours favourable to innovation.

INSA Lyon's end objective is to qualify first rate engineers. This is taken into account as from the first year of the curriculum. The curriculum is composed of:

- a two-year first cycle, with the first year being a preliminary year serving to provide students with the basic training and all the elements they will need to choose their speciality from the 12 fields proposed by the University,
- a three-year second cycle, during which the general training is completed with more advanced teaching in the field of speciality, and during which students are required to undertake an in-house industrial placement period and to carry out an end-of-year industrially oriented assignment (Projet de Fin d'Etudes PFE) in a research laboratory. Most of the students spend one or two semesters in a foreign country as part of their industrial placement scheme or as part of the partner programme with INSA Lyon's foreign University partners.
