Private, semi-private, group swim classes for kids, teenagers & adults:

Swim Lessons for Kids:
When teaching children, James strives to create an environment of trust and respect, and within this framework, he introduces fun and challenging games that motivate and instruct without being dictatorial or condescending to the student. By applying this technique diligently and consistently, his success rates with infants, toddlers and pre-adolescents have been unparalleled.

Parent and child classes are usually recommended for toddlers. Within this dynamic, the child has a source of trust and comfort through which they can discover and explore the water through fun and games with the parent. In addition, safety skills such as the back float, treading water, and changing direction (turning from your front to back) are encouraged so that your child will know what to do in case of an emergency.

For children ages 5-10, tje lessons focus on stroke development, improving safety skills and incorporating a bit of competitive fun to the lesson in the form of games or races.

Swim Lessons for Teenagers / Adults:
When working with beginner adults or teens with fear, we work on trying to discover the source of the fear and begin understanding water principles. Through experience and lots of patience and vigilance, we will learn to manage the fear so that the skills become more comfortable and easy to execute.

For students already comfortable with the water, but who would like to swim more comfortably or efficiently, we will set foundations outlined in James' Approach whilst incorporating understanding of water principles. We will be able to spot any issues that need to be worked on while we are swimming. We will then systematically and progressively learn the the proper movement of the different aspects of the front crawl or any other stroke that the student wishes to learn or improve. Through identifying priorities, meticulous adjustments and practice, your stroke will eventually become more powerful, smoother and efficient. Treading water, a great safety skill will be incorporated into the swim classes as it is very similarly tied in with stroke development.

Competitive Swimming:
For competitive, fitness swimmers, or those who train for triathlons that are already comfortable with swimming in the water but desire to strengthen their stroke or just want a professional opinion, James focuses on perfecting stroke technique and understanding of hydrodynamic principles through drills and techniques to allow smooth and efficient propulsion through the water. This combined with practice and more practice, will improve the swim time during competition.

We will assess the stroke and make the adjustments as we see fit to the stroke in terms of efficiency and power. Swimming efficiently is gained by striking an acute balance between power and grace. The more power that is involved with a stroke, the more glide you will be able to achieve consequently, thus making the stroke smoother and efficient. Finally, through drills and sets, we will be able to make the adjustment to solidify the stroke as well as know what to expect when swimming certain distances and at different paces.

Imagine School Of Swimming, New York
Courses / Programs
Imagine Swimming, for children ages 12-months to 12-years, was founded in 2002 by former world-class swimmers Casey Barrett and Lars Merseburg. Originally operated out of the Hunter College pool on 69th Street and Park Avenue, the school has grown to nine New York locations - extending from TriBeCa to the Upper East Side, Brooklyn Heights to Chelsea. Imagine is now the most popular swimming program in lower Manhattan, with the BMCC pool in TriBeCa its flagship facility. Currently, the school welcomes over 1200 students each week to its pools.

Widely recognized in the swimming community as one of the world's top aquatic educations, Imagine has become a destination for international swimmers eager to pass along their skills as elite instructors. Like many of the city’s top preschools, Imagine has absorbed the teachings of Reggio Emilia, the Italian educational philosophy that places great respect on children’s imaginations and their interaction with the natural world. We feel this philosophy may be best expressed in the water – where every sense is engaged and the opportunities for exploration are endless.
Swimming Programs for Children. Programs range from Beginners to Advanced. We accept children from 12 months upwards.
