Traditional fiddle classes in County Kerry, Ireland

Kerry Fiddles:
Kerry Fiddles, situated in the beautiful County Kerry in south west Ireland, teach week long classes (mornings only) in Traditional Irish Fiddle for adults. Afternoons are free to explore this, the most beautiful part of Ireland. In the evenings we will go to sessions and gigs when available.

We do our best learning when we’re relaxed, so don’t expect a studious music course. Though we aim to motivate, lay solid foundations and teach effective practice, our main concern is that you have fun.

These courses are designed to give you the best possible introduction to fiddle playing and would be a good grounding for anyone wanting to go on to learn other musical styles/languages - Scottish, Eastern European, Welsh, Bluegrass, Old Timey (and with some theory, Classical or Jazz.)

Irish music, like other languages, is best learned by ear, so there's next to no musical theory on this course. Instead you'll just be copying sounds, making patterns and creating effects - playing music! There will be a lot of emphasis on preparation and balance and an inordinate amount of emphasis on the benefits of laziness!

There are several 5 star hotels, lots of homely bed and breakfasts, a good number of self-catering cottages and loads of guesthouses. There are two very reasonably priced hostels in town with private single and double rooms as well as dormitories. There’s also a campsite just outside town.

The Shaminir Bed & Breakfast is about 3 miles out of town on the north coast of the Beara Peninsular. The views north and west across Kenmare Bay to the Mcgillicuddys Reeks are breathtaking.

Kerry has 14 of the 21 highest mountains in Ireland, the largest collection of Neolithic rock art in Europe and an embarrassing number of stone circles. You can take a boat trip around Kenmare Bay, a jaunting car through the Gap of Dunloe, climb Mcgillicuddys Reeks and walk miles of white strand. A new water sports centre has recently opened just outside Kenmare, there are loads of pony trekking centres, world class golf courses and apparently more café’s per square kilometre than anywhere else in Ireland!
