Sheffield Hallam University:
Located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Sheffield Hallam University offers English courses for international students. Students can choose between a ten or twelve short course in English, aimed at non-native speakers of English who wish to improve their English language skills for both general and academic purposes. We offer a pre-sessional English for academic purposes for international students about to start an undergraduate or postgraduate course here at Sheffield Hallam University or elsewhere in the UK as well as an academic English course for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language skills while experiencing life in Britain.

English for International Students:
Full-time – typically 10–12 weeks. This English language course is for non-native speakers of English who wish to improve their English language skills for both general and academic purposes.

This course aims to provide a balanced comprehensive English programme, including the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. This will enable you to communicate in English in social and professional situations.

We provide an enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere in which to study with a maximum number of students per class of 15. You are encouraged to participate as much as possible. You are given regular homework and self-study guidance to help practice and revise class work.

Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes:
This course is for international students about to start an undergraduate or postgraduate course here at Sheffield Hallam University or elsewhere in the UK. You develop the academic English skills which allow you to operate comfortably, and participate fully, in all aspects of university life.

By the end of the course you will be able to
• demonstrate an understanding of spoken and written English in academic contexts
• use spoken and written English in academic contexts
• demonstrate the English language study skills needed to undertake successfully a mainstream academic course
• communicate comfortably in everyday English using and recognising a wide range of language forms
• demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of British culture, both academic and social

The course includes a programme of social activities and visits to places of interest in and around Sheffield. There is an extra cost for some of these activities.

Academic English Preparatory Course:
Full-time. This new course is for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language skills for general and academic purposes, while experiencing life in Britain.

The aim of the course is communication through English. We provide you with a balanced English language programme which develops your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This course is particularly useful if you need to reach the entry level for the Autumn Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course.

The course combines dynamic modern teaching with a modern university atmosphere. It is based in an exciting city with a wealth of culture, sports and nightlife, close to the unspoilt countryside of the Peak District National Park.

IELTS Exam Preparatory Course:
Sheffield Hallam University is a testing centre for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS tests are held in the Owen Building, at our City Campus and last the whole day (8.30am-5pm).

University English Scheme:
Part time. This scheme provides English language support for our enrolled students whose first language is not English. It offers various classes and support to suit your needs.

English for academic purposes
This 20-credit module covers reading, writing, speaking and listening for academic purposes.

English language support classes
These free, non-credit classes improve your academic English and cover grammar, reading, writing, listening or speaking.

Language Advisory Service
This service offers half-hour, one-to-one consultations on writing and other language problems.

Graduate Diploma Business and English (pre-masters course):
Full-time. The Graduate Diploma in Business and English is a pre-masters course, designed for international students (non-native speakers of English) intending to pursue postgraduate studies in business, management, finance or related studies.

It provides you with the opportunity to improve your English language proficiency and business knowledge to a level which will allow you entry onto selected postgraduate courses offered within Sheffield Hallam University and other academic institutions.

The course provides an equal balance of English language development and knowledge of business, management and finance. On successfully completing this course, you can choose from a wide range of postgraduate courses to suit your interests and career development needs.
