The Kinkaid School, Houston:
The Kinkaid School is a non-sectarian, college preparatory day school in Houston located in Harris County, Texas, enrolling a total of 1,280 boys and girls in grades pre-kindergarten through to 12th. Kinkaid's students range in age from four years to eighteen years. The school has three divisions: Lower School (Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and grades 1-4); Middle School (grades 5-8); and Upper School (grades 9-12). Each school division has its own faculty, classrooms, and separate identity, and each has a specific educational plan for nurturing its students. The divisions are unified through educational ideals that characterize Kinkaid and determine its policies.
Education Programs:
- Lower School program (Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and grades 1-4)
- Middle School program (grades 5-8)
- Upper School program (grades 9-12)
Lower School Academics:
The Lower School employs a multi-faceted approach to learning, teaming academic challenges with “real life” experiences for the children. Combining multi-sensory methods to content areas allow the students to “see it, do it, and touch it.” The units of study are project based in the prekindergarten and kindergarten, and multi-disciplinary in grades one through four. Overarching themes direct the areas of study that promote asking essential questions that generate interest and excitement in the process of determining answers. Teachers also consider student readiness levels, learning styles, and interest for their students and incorporate specific strategies that focus on needs and academic challenge.
Opportunities for learning are not limited to the classroom, and a comprehensive approach incorporates perspectives from art, music, science, global awareness and daily physical education, as well as off-campus field trips.
Character education and community service are integrated into all areas of school life from the classroom to the playground. Whether it’s singing with senior citizens, making care packages for our troops or donating books for a children’s library effort in Africa, the students have awareness of others that goes beyond the campus walls.
Middle School Academics:
Kinkaid’s Middle School program was designed for grades fifth through eighth, recognizing the significant changes in physical, emotional and intellectual growth that students experience at this age. We develop student confidence and independence through a skill- and competency-based curriculum and promote interdisciplinary learning with a curriculum that is challenging and exploratory, providing opportunities for students to discover and to develop a variety of interests.
The fifth grade Study Skills course is designed to help students bridge the transition from self-contained Lower School to Middle School’s departmentalized schedule. Students in grades seventh and eighth are ready for an accelerated curriculum, which provides the critical bridge to Upper School with traditional course offerings, extracurricular clubs and sports. Highlights of every grade in Middle School include various field trips and over-night trips which focus on teamwork and cooperation. Students also participate in local community service programs.
Our program meets students at their current stage of development and is committed to ensuring their growth. We seek to engage students in the learning process and encourage them to become independent thinkers.
Upper School Academics:
Our curriculum provides for breadth and depth within the academic classrooms. In every academic discipline, we offer introductory courses leading to advanced (Advanced Placement) courses. These courses emphasize learning course material and the development of higher order learning skills. Our goal is to prepare students for college as well as to develop lifelong learners.
Learning to write, to reason, to hypothesize, to apply knowledge in unfamiliar situations are all a part of the Kinkaid education. In academics, students have the opportunity to investigate areas of new interest or develop and sustain areas where they have expertise or talent. Beyond the formal classroom setting, we provide the chance for independent study in areas of student special interest.
