Aberystwyth University:
Aberystwyth University, located 100 miles north west of Cardiff on the Welsh coast is an independent university offering you a diverse range of postgraduate courses. At Aberystwyth University Postgraduate Students can study a taught or research course. Taught Courses (MA, MSc, MScEcon, LLM, MBA, MRes, PG Diploma and PG Certificate) are based primarily on a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, study schools. Research Courses (PhD, MPhil and LLM by Research) are based purely or predominantly on the student's own research under the guidance of at least one supervisor.

A taught Master’s degree usually requires 12 months of study involving two “taught” semesters and a final “self-study” semester. The taught element will include traditional lectures and seminars. Some programmes will also involve group discussions and case study analysis. During the self-study semester, you will need to complete a supervised dissertation and/or project. Assessment of the degree can take various forms such as unseen written examinations, assessed coursework, group project work etc.

What is a higher degree by research?
A higher degree by research requires in-depth study within a specific field which is compatible with the research interests of the University. Research students produce original and publishable work the results of which are presented in a thesis and through an oral examination.

- An MPhil is a master’s degree by research and allows individuals to research an area of specific interest. The work should be original.

- A PhD requires considerable commitment and is usually required for those wishing to pursue a career in academia. The work should be original and of a standard worthy of publication in peer reviewed journals.

Distance Learning Courses:
Distance Learning is a flexible approach to study that allows you to work at your own pace in your own place. Aberystwyth offers Masters courses by Distance Learning through the Departments of Law and Criminology and Information Studies. These departments pursue a student centred, flexible, open learning approach which has proved not only popular with our students, but very successful in managing to make studying at a distance as rewarding and enjoyable as possible. Our distance learning students participate in residential study schools and are supported by web-based conferencing facilities which enable them to communicate with each other and the course tutors, easing the feeling of isolation that can sometimes be felt by distance learners.

Aberystwyth University is located in Aberystwyth, a historic market town, administrative centre and holiday resort within Ceredigion, on the coast of Wales. Aberystwyth University has two attractive landscaped campuses. The campuses are about a mile apart by road on a well served bus route. On both campuses, the laboratories, libraries, teaching and social buildings are within walking distance of each other, separated by open spaces with lawns and trees. Residential facilities for students are also located on campus. Together, both campuses provide an environment which is conducive to teaching and research.
