The Cass (The Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design) is one of ten departments of London Metropolitan University, and is situated on the East London City fringe, a vibrant area recognised as a centre of excellence for both art and design. This unique environment of commerce, art galleries and design workshops exposes our students to the highest levels of professional practice. The department offers a broad range of full and part-time postgraduate degree courses in art, media and design disciplines. These include Taught MA’s, MA’s By Research, Mphil and Phd. We also offer a three month International Pre-Masters (graduate certificate) course for international students, which combines preparation for postgraduate study in a creative discipline with English Language classes.
We offer a wide range of courses including short courses, a foundation year leading to extended degrees across our portfolio, foundation degrees and degrees, taught masters, research masters and PhD/MPhil.

The staff are well known and respected within their specialist areas and our record is one of the strongest in the sector, with art and design scoring an excellent 23 out of 24 in the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) subject review.
All students can access computing, photographic and reprographic facilities together with specialist technical support. We also have the widest range of specialist facilities in Europe for silversmithing, jewellery, furniture, furnishing and technologies in music. These include CNC, CAD and CAM for work in metal, wood, plastics, and musical instrument manufacture, as well as workshops supporting instrument-making and repair; furniture prototype and batch production; upholstery and soft furnishing; silversmithing, jewellery and allied crafts; and finishing processes for wood and metal. There are studios for graphic design and interior design, drawing, painting, installation and performance-related activity, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, time-based media and 3D. Our laboratories support electronic and acoustic study, materials science and restoration and conservation.
Students benefit from a video studio, professional high definition video cameras, video and editing suites, photography studio and darkrooms, a radio/sound-editing studio and a screening room. The dedicated digital animation studios are equipped with high-definition editing and animation workstations with all the relevant software. Other resources include a blue screen studio, and negotiated access to professional sound studios. We have a strong publications record in youth culture, Hollywood film, and media audiences and mass communications.
