School of Contemporary Chinese Studies, University of Nottingham:
The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies, University of Nottingham is located in Nottingham, in Nottinghamshire County in the East Midlands of England (approximately 2 hours north of London). It is the only academic school in the UK to focus specifically on contemporary China, and it is recognised as a national leader in the provision of high quality, discipline-based research and degree programs in this area. We offer a wide range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to students from the UK, Europe and around the world. Unlike any other university in the UK, we welcome students who have already studied Mandarin as well as complete beginners; native speakers of Mandarin Chinese are offered a broad range of alternative modules.

- Undergraduate Degree Programmes:  We offer structured yet flexible three- and four-year courses allowing you to tailor your programme of study to your own interests and career aspirations. These courses include the single honours BA Contemporary Chinese Studies programme, 4 year degrees including MSci Global Issues and Contemporary Chinese Studies and MSci Business and Economy of Contemporary China, or a selection of 12 different combined courses.

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to spend their whole second year abroad at Nottingham’s China campus in Ningbo, China where they gain first-hand experience of living and studying in China. Native speakers of Mandarin Chinese remain in the UK throughout their studies.

Single honours BA (Hons) Contemporary Chinese Studies course:
  This combines in-depth study of China’s contemporary society, media, culture, economy, politics, geography and history with Mandarin Chinese from beginners’ to advanced level.

MSci courses:  The MSci courses were launched in September 2008. These undergraduate masters degrees offer you opportunities to gain an unique insight into the rapid developments in China, with the flexibility of either a broad focus in the MSci Contemporary Chinese Studies, or the more specialised MSci Business and Economy of Contemporary China or MSci Global Issues and Contemporary Chinese Studies.

MSci Contemporary Chinese Studies:  Study contemporary Chinese society, popular culture and media, economics, politics, geography, and modern history along with Mandarin Chinese from beginner to advanced levels.

MSci Business and Economy of Contemporary China:  Combine in-depth study of China's contemporary economy with an understanding of the disciplines of business and economics and practical experience of working in China.

MSci Global Issues and Contemporary Chinese Studies:  Study China's global political environment and gain practical experience of living and studying in China

* Students choosing the MSc Management in Contemporary China programme and Emerging Markets have the opportunity to either complete an internship in China or the UK, or to write a dissertation based on a subject agreed with their supervisor.

Research opportunities:
The Doctorate programme allows students to conduct in-depth research focusing on topics related to contemporary China. This includes a broad range of social sciences and business-related subjects as well as topics covering china policy through the School`s China Policy Institute.

Mandarin Chinese Tuition Courses:
 The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies currently has a friendly and dedicated team of Mandarin Chinese language teachers, providing accessible Mandarin tuition to students, those studying Mandarin as part of joint degrees and as an option as part of a range of degrees across the University. We offer modules from beginners’ to advanced level. While no prior Mandarin language experience is required, students with existing language expertise will also be accommodated.

Mandarin teaching at Nottingham is greatly supported by the virtual learning environment WebCT and e-learning materials. We also take advantage of a range of facilities in the University including the digital classroom and a Self Access Centre for independent learning.
