Located in Bournemouth on the south coast of England (just 2 hours south-west of London), Athena Teacher Training specialises in providing high-quality English language teacher training courses for new and existing teachers of English. We offer a 4-week Trinity CertTESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) course, structured to ensure that you get the best from your time training to become a teacher.
Bournemouth is a major destination for English language learners and offers a wealth of job opportunities for newly qualified teachers. We estimate that at any one time there is demand for between 300 and 400 qualified teachers in the immediate area! During the summer, up to 14,000 foreign students choose to study English in Bournemouth while during the off-season, approximately one third of this number remain to create a constant demand for qualified teachers in the language schools.
Athena Teacher Training is conveniently situated in the heart of Bournemouth, just a stone’s throw from the sandy beaches and a short walk from the centre of town with its bustling bistros and shops. We are no more than 5 minutes by taxi from the travel interchange which consists of both train and coach stations.
- CertTESOL Course (4 weeks / 120 hours):
This course consists of 5 units: Language Awareness; Teaching Skills; Materials Assignment; Learner Profile; Unknown Language. Each week has been designed to complement the next and you will undertake assignments and mini-projects in a specific order to ensure that your learning is as seamless as possible. Each week consists of at least 30 hours spent training and this is also supplemented by work that you must complete in your own time.
Units include:
- Teaching Skills (Teaching methodology, create a teaching practice journal and an observation journal)
- Language Awareness (Grammar, phonology and aspects of linguistic understanding)
- Learner Profile (Analyse an English learner and diagnose their strengths and weaknesses)
- Materials Assignment (Plan, produce and adapt all kinds of learning materials)
- Unknown Language (Experience learning a new language)

We can organise homestay accommodation with a friendly host family in the local area. All our families are selected by accommodation officers and are regularly visited to ensure that standards remain high. Situated as close as possible to our school, they are either within walking distance or on a direct bus route to the centre. They offer single rooms, breakfast and dinner during the week and breakfast, light lunch and dinner at the weekends.

• St Brelade’s College is located on the British island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, approximately 20 miles off the French coast and 80 miles south of England. • We are accredited by the British Council and are a member of English UK, along with being a validated course provider of the Trinity College London Cert.
